#1 A Seawall Walk In The Gulf Islands National Seashore

A seawall circling the main fort area in Fort Pickens is an excellent place for a walk. It offers views of Pensacola Bay, the Pass, and the Gulf of Mexico. For sunset lovers, this west portion of the wall is a great place to view a stunning sunset. The wall is approximately one mile in length. No dogs or bikes are allowed on the wall.

#2 Hike To A Graffitied Fishery

Hike to an abandoned Pompano hatchery near Big Sabine Bay along the Florida National Scenic Trail. The fishery that once was is now the remnant of tanks, now covered in graffiti, making it a unique site in such a picturesque location. This location has plenty of photo opportunities, and it's nestled in an area with beautiful dunes, wetlands, and views.

Terrain: Sandy

How To Get There

Park at Park East.
Look for the marked trail to the southeast of the parking area.
Hike south, following the trail to Santa Rosa Sound. (This is a sandy trail and primitive area).
Once you arrive at the primitive camp area, follow the waterline to the tanks.

Remember to pack your trash and leave only your footprints.

#3 Hike Through A Pitcher Plant Prairie

Did you know a rare, endangered carnivorous plant called the pitcher plant thrives in Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park? The raised boardwalk takes you over a pitcher plant prairie, giving you up-close views of the plant. The trail ends on a pier overlooking Tarkiln Bayou.

If you want a good look at Florida wetlands, hike on the Edward Ball Nature Trail at the University of West Florida. The raised boardwalk winds through an upper hardwood wetland forest with views of Tarkiln Bayou. Two footbridges cross Thompson Bayou, where hikers enjoy seeing fish, turtles, or even a resident alligator. Stop by the university's visitor center to pick up a parking pass when visiting.
