Ray Concannon
Transportation — Pensacola Bay City Ferry
This past summer, Captain Ray was running the boats for our ferry service at Pensacola Bay City Ferry.
While on a return trip from the beach he noticed a vessel in distress under the Bob Sykes Bridge. He radioed the vessel operator who was beginning to panic. He had crashed his vessel and run aground, losing propulsion. Captain Ray then contacted the U.S. Coast Guard to inform them of the vessel in distress. He stayed with the vessel to keep the waterway clear of traffic and avoid any potential collisions. Hells began to prepare to rescue the vessel operator in the event he began sinking before the Coast Guard arrived. Thanks to Captain Ray, the U.S. Coast Guard was able to get to the vessel operator in time to successfully rescue him before any further damage was done.
Evan Wheeler
Attractions — Hot Spots Charters
As the owner of Hot Spots Charters, I have witnessed Captain Evan's remarkable dedication to hospitality, education, and conservation firsthand.
Recently, Captain Evan took it upon himself to volunteer at a kid's fishing education event for middle schoolers at Shoreline Park, despite his busy schedule managing our company and guiding fishing charters. His decision to share his wealth of knowledge about local fish species, conservation efforts, knot-tying techniques, and coastal biology with the children reflects his genuine passion for educating and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. Not only did the kids have an unforgettable experience, but they also gained valuable insights thanks to Captain Evan's expertise.
Beyond his volunteer work, Captain Evan's contributions to wildlife management through Hot Spots Charters are truly commendable. During the off-season, he dedicates his time to various wildlife management projects, demonstrating his commitment to preserving our natural resources. Additionally, his role as a college course instructor and research biologist at the University of West Florida underscores his profound impact on academia and research in our community.
Captain Evan's fearless approach to wildlife conservation is a testament to his unwavering dedication to his craft. His positive attitude and infectious enthusiasm not only inspire those around him but also leave a lasting impact on the wildlife conservation efforts in our community.
In light of Captain Evan's exceptional contributions to our community, recognizing his outstanding efforts would honor his achievements and serve as a testament to his positive influence on our community.
Donna Vandergrift
Lodging — Hyatt Place Pensacola Airport
When you think of servicing those in the hospitality industry, you first think of serving mankind. But that's not always the case. We had a unique situation occur at our property when one of our guests abandoned a mom cat and her kittens in one of our guest rooms.
They were trapped inside of a duffle bag, scared and helpless. Upon hearing the heartbreaking news about the cat and kittens being abandoned, Donna immediately sprang into compassionate action. She started calling local animal rescues, desperately trying to find someone willing to take in the poor kittens and give them the care they needed. After multiple calls, a rescue organization from Fort Walton finally agreed to provide a haven for the kittens. Without hesitation, Donna personally transported the tiny furry creatures all the way to the rescue center, despite the long distance. Her empathy and dedication to helping those in need, even when they happened to be defenseless kittens, is truly inspiring. This story of Donna's selfless actions to save the abandoned animals made the local news! It just goes to show, when you work in hospitality and tourism, serving others means more than just serving human guests - it means serving any living being in need. With her big heart and compassion for all creatures great and small, I would like to nominate Donna as a true hospitality hero. Stories like this remind us that helping others should always come first, no matter what species they are.
